Oh but You Have Time…

I just spent 3 hours on the phone with on my dear friends. As we’re on the phone I did so much stuff. Cleaned the bathroom, made a custom wine glass, shopped for glitter, looked for dinner recipes, had a glass of wine, and sat down in the dark not being questioned by kids. I know that’s a lot. But being able to get multiple things done in that time was easy. I‘m sure y’all like how did you focus on the conversation. The conversation is what guided me to get my list done.
As a mom I frequently catch myself and other moms saying “I don’t have time for me.” Or even someone telling me I have too much going on with 4 kids and a husband and I don’t have time. I used to agree…. Not so much anymore. I have time. So do you. We’re just not using it wisely.
Even my therapist told me this recently, and when I tried to debate her on that home girl said prove it and gave me homework. Now that I’m sitting still waiting for my youngest to finish bath-time, I thought I would share what I came up with. Theses items are beyond simple and super easy to implement.
7 ways I found time for myself…
Make a schedule and stick to it. Set aside specific times for different activities, such as work, hobbies, and family time. Make sure to include breaks and time for yourself. This is a constant work in progress, but I’m trying. On my personal calendar and work calendar I have pockets of time set aside for myself for low energy days and high energy days.
Take a break from screens. Unplugging from devices and screens can help reduce stress and give you time to relax and do something enjoyable. Go put your devices up for 5 minutes a day. Set a timer. This is easy because that’s how long it takes to get my coffee in the morning and how long I take when I’m hiding from my kids. We need breaks to breath, think, and just be. Find you a spot somewhere in your home that you can get to and just sit.
Find an activity that you enjoy and make time for it. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or listening to music, make time for it so that you can have something to look forward to. I love to make things. i.e. why I have my online store. I’m always making something for somebody and it is so relaxing, rewarding and satisfying.
Make use of your commute. If you have a long commute, use it to relax, listen to music, or read a book. Can’t get any easier than this.
Get outside. Take a break from your routine and get some fresh air. Taking a walk or doing some gardening can help clear your head. Here in Indiana we have some bipolar weather. So on these random 60 degree days, I load up the toddler in his stroller and go for a stroll around the neighborhood.
Talk to a friend. Talking to someone can help you process your thoughts and feelings, and can be a great way to relax. This is why I spent 3 hours on the phone. We literally talked about everything. A good friend and good conversation brings so much peace and rejuvenation.
Take a mental health day. Sometimes it’s important to take a break from your obligations and focus on yourself. Self-care is essential for your well-being. If you know me I am a proud supporter of mental health. Take a day off from everything. I have mine scheduled for Friday and I can’t wait to grab my $8 coffee, go get a pedicure then sit and do nothing for a few hours.
