How to Organzie Your Closet like a Pro

I am in love with Lean Six Sigma’s 5S methodology of eliminating waste. So much that I apply this to the way I organize things in my home. What Six Sigma does is reduce, organize and eliminate waste so things can work more efficient. In our case we have wasted closet space that we need to get rid of it. We need to be efficient when picking out our clothes and also eliminating clutter.

5S stands for:

1. Sort

2. Set in order

3. Shine

4. Standardize

5. Sustain.

I have tweaked this a little bit to fit our closet decluttering needs.

These are the major keys 🔑 to having an organized functional closet.

In this how to guide I will give 3 easy ways to achieve this goal of a fabulous, fully functional closet!

First thing first SORT!

Pull everything out of your closet! Yes everything! Now sort it! The way I sort my things is into piles and label them Keep, Sale, & Give away.

Set it!

Once everything is sorted and labeled, it’s time to set it everything you are going to keep in order! Your closet should be completely cleaned out at this point and ready to be restocked.

Here are some things you might need:

1. Stackable bins for your shoes, a shoe organizer that hangs on the door or one you can put under your bed( if you have as mant shoes as I do then you need all 3).

2. Hooks for your accessories. I personally use a tie/belt hanger from Dollar Tree. For my earrings I have a tackle box with draws.

3. Hangers!

When you are setting your things in order, you put like items together. So all of your dress pants should be in one section. All of your dresses should be together in another section by color and going from longest to shortest. All of your shirts together etc.

Through all of this you have to sustain it! That means you do all this work and you keep it looking great! You don’t throw your clothes on your closet floor, you don’t leave your shoes all over the place. You keep it clean!
